世界には罪の問題があります Sin Is The Problem

世界の何が問題になっていますか？なぜそれほど多くの暴動？なぜ人々はそんなに怒っているのですか？答え：罪のため。世界には罪の問題があります。

聖書には「罪から来る報酬は死です。しかし、神の下さる賜物は、私たちの主キリスト・イエスにある永遠のいのちです。」(ローマ6:23)と書いてあります。キリストは私たちの罪の代価を払ってくださいました。私たちは皆永遠の死を経験するに値する存在であり、キリストの救いを受け入れない者は皆自分でその代価を払うのです。アダムとエバはその罪の代価をエデンの園からの追放という形で経験しました。私たちは罪の結果を「神の懲らしめ」と見なすべきです。ヘブル書には「そして、あなたがたに向かって子どもに対するように語られたこの勧めを忘れています。『わが子よ。主の懲らしめを軽んじてはならない。主に責められて弱り果ててはならない。主はその愛する者を懲らしめ、受け入れるすべての子に、むちを加えられるからである。』訓練と思って耐え忍びなさい。神はあなたがたを子として扱っておられるのです。父が懲らしめることをしない子がいるでしょうか。もしあなたがたが、だれでも受ける懲らしめを受けていないとすれば、私生子であって、ほんとうの子ではないのです。さらにまた、私たちには肉の父がいて、私たちを懲らしめたのですが、しかも私たちは彼らを敬ったのであれば、なおさらのこと、私たちはすべての霊の父に服従して生きるべきではないでしょうか。なぜなら、肉の父親は、短い期間、自分が良いと思うままに私たちを懲らしめるのですが、霊の父は、私たちの益のため、私たちをご自分の聖さにあずからせようとして、懲らしめるのです。すべての懲らしめは、そのときは喜ばしいものではなく、かえって悲しく思われるものですが、後になると、これによって訓練された人々に平安な義の実を結ばせます」(ヘブル12:5-11)と書いてあります。

神は私たちを戒め、懲らしめをもたらすことで私たちがさらにキリストのようになる事を促すことによってご自分の愛を示してくださいます。良い父親は自分の子供が間違った道を下ろうとしている事を知った際に、懲らしめを持って正しい道へと導くのです。懲らしめには様々な形があり、それは罪の大きさによって変わってきます。全く懲らしめを受けず、間違った行動の刈り取りをさせられないならば、子供は何が正しい事なのかを知る事はできません。

ですから、神は愛のゆえにご自分に属する子供達に懲らしめを与えるのです。罪の結果を経験しないならば、私たちはその罪が間違っていた事を知る事はできないでしょう。詩篇には「不法を行う者らは知らないのか。彼らはパンを食らうように、わたしの民を食らい、神を呼び求めようとはしない。」(詩篇53:4)、また「彼は心の中で言う。『神は忘れている。顔を隠している。彼は決して見はしないのだ。』」(10:11)とも書いてあります。神が罪の結果をもたらさなかったら、私たちは失敗を通して学ぶ事はできません。神の懲らしめは私たちに危害を与えるための者ではありません。懲らしめを通して神は「我が子よ、その道は間違っている。正しい事を行い、正しい道に戻りなさい」と言われるのです。懲らしめなしでは私たちは間違った道を歩み続ける事になるでしょう。

神は私たちが永遠の死である地獄(黙示録20:14)を経験する必要がないように、罪の代価を払ってくださいました。神は愛のゆえに私たちを懲らしめ、ご自分との正しい関係へと導いて下さいます。ですから、次に罪の結果の苦しみを感じる際には神が愛のゆえに懲らしめを与えて下さっている事を思い出しましょう。

神の律法に背く事はしばしば神の愛の懲らしめとは関係ない罪の結果の苦しみを招きます。例えば、殺人犯がキリストを受け入れ、神の永遠の赦しを受け、天国で神との交わりを持つ確信を与えられたとしても、彼の生活する社会では殺人という罪の代価を払う事を義務付けるでしょう。その人は無期懲役や死刑の判決を受けるかもしれません。しかしそれらの状況も神によって大きく用いられ、永遠の喜びをます事にもつながります。

What is wrong with the world? Why so many riots? Why are people so angry? The answer: Because of sin. The world has a sin problem.

The ultimate—and severest—consequence of sin is death. The Bible says that “the wages of sin is death” (Romans 6:23). This not only refers to physical death, but to eternal separation from God: “But your iniquities have separated you from your God; your sins have hidden His face from you, so that He will not hear” (Isaiah 59:2). This is the foremost consequence of man’s rebellion against God.

Yet many want to believe that God is so “loving” that He will overlook our “little faults,” “lapses” and “indiscretions.” Little white lies, cheating on the tax return, taking that pen when no one is looking, or secretly viewing pornography—these are peccadillos, not worthy of death, right? The problem is, sin is sin, big or small. Though God loves us, His holiness is such that He cannot live with evil. The prophet Habakkuk describes God this way: “Your eyes are too pure to look on evil; you cannot tolerate wrong” (Habakkuk 1:13). God does not ignore our sin. On the contrary, “you may be sure that your sin will find you out” (Numbers 32:23). Even those secret sins we hide in the recesses of our hearts will one day be brought to light: “Nothing in all creation is hidden from God’s sight. Everything is uncovered and laid bare before the eyes of Him to whom we must give account” (Hebrews 4:13).

Paul made it abundantly clear that sin has consequences: “Do not be deceived: God cannot be mocked. A man reaps what he sows” (Galatians 6:7). Paul then describes the end of those who indulge in sinful behavior: “The one who sows to please his sinful nature, from that nature will reap destruction” (Galatians 6:8). The phrase “sinful nature” refers to one’s unregenerate, shameless self. Though the sin nature may promise fulfillment, it can result in nothing but “destruction.”

Paul told the believers in Galatia that “the sinful nature desires what is contrary to the Spirit, and the Spirit what is contrary to the sinful nature. They are in conflict with each other . . .” (Galatians 5:17). Then he lists the sordid works of the sin nature and specifies the ultimate consequence of such behavior: “Those who live like this will not inherit the kingdom of God” (see Galatians 5:19-21). Those who live in debauchery and sin sow the seeds of destruction in their present-day life and forfeit any hope of eternal life.

The Bible describes those who choose to indulge in sin as being “darkened in their understanding and separated from the life of God because of the ignorance that is in them due to the hardening of their hearts. Having lost all sensitivity, they have given themselves over to sensuality so as to indulge in every kind of impurity, with a continual lust for more” (Ephesians 4:18-19). One of the consequences of sin, therefore, is more sin. There’s an insatiable “lust for more,” attended by a dulling of the conscience and a blindness to spiritual truth (1 Corinthians 2:14).

The consequence of suppressing the truth is that God gives the sinner over to “the sinful desires of their hearts,” “shameful lusts” and “a depraved mind” (Romans 1:24, 26, 28). This means that God may allow the sinner to serve as his own god and to reap the destruction of his body and soul. It is a fearful thing to be “given over” to our own destructive ways.

God has made it clear that “the soul who sins will die” (Ezekiel 18:4, NASB). Those who habitually live their lives outside of Christ, yet whose hearts have been convicted by the gospel of Christ, should follow the example of the first converts of the church: “They were cut to the heart and said to Peter and the other apostles, ‘Brothers, what shall we do?’” The answer was simple yet profound: “Repent!” (Acts 2:37-38).

Jesus’ first words when He began His ministry were, “The time has come. The kingdom of God is near. Repent and believe the good news!” (Mark 1:15). What is the good news? “For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life” (John 3:16).

The consequence of sin is death, but “the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord” (Romans 6:23).

キリストの誕生は、キリストの死と復活を指し示しています。これらの中で私たちの救いと許しを発見されました。

使徒の働き１３：３８は「ですから、兄弟たち。あなたがたに罪の赦しが宣べられているのはこの方によるということを、よく知っておいてください。」と言っています。

「許し」という言葉は、過去を水に流す、赦免する、負債を帳消しにするという意味です。私たちが誰かに過ちを犯す時、私たちはその関係を修復させるために、彼らの赦しを求めます。赦しは、赦されるにふさわしい人だから与えられるのではありません。だれひとりとして赦しを受けるにふさわしくないのです。赦しは、愛の行為であり、憐れみで、そして恵みです。赦しは、何をしたかにかかわらず、相手に対してされたことを心に留めないという決意です。

私たちはみな神からの赦しが必要だと聖書は言っています。私たちはみな罪を犯しました。伝道者の書７章２０節では「この地上には、善を行ない、罪を犯さない正しい人はひとりもいないから」と言っており、ヨハネの手紙第一１章８節では「もし、罪はないと言うなら、私たちは自分を欺いており、真理は私たちのうちにはありません」と言っています。結局、すべての罪は神への反抗の行為なのです（詩篇５１編４章）。その結果、神の赦しを切に求める必要があります。もし、私たちの罪が赦されないなら、私たちの罪の結果、永遠の刑罰を受けるのです（マタイ２５章４６節、ヨハネ３章３６節）。

In the birth of Christ there is a pointing to Christ's death and resurrection. In these are found the forgiveness of our sins.

Acts 13:38 declares, "Therefore, my brothers, I want you to know that through Jesus the forgiveness of sins is proclaimed to you."

The word "forgive" means to wipe the slate clean, to pardon, to cancel a debt. When we wrong someone, we seek their forgiveness in order for the relationship to be restored. Forgiveness is not granted because a person deserves to be forgiven. No one deserves to be forgiven. Forgiveness is an act of love, mercy, and grace. Forgiveness is a decision to not hold something against another person, despite what they have done to you.

The Bible tells us that we are all in need of forgiveness from God. We have all committed sin. Ecclesiastes 7:20 proclaims, "There is not a righteous man on earth who does what is right and never sins." First John 1:8 says, "If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us." All sin is ultimately an act of rebellion against God (Psalm 51:4). As a result, we desperately need God’s forgiveness. If our sins are not forgiven, we will spend eternity suffering the consequences of our sins (Matthew 25:46; John 3:36).

Thankfully, God is loving and merciful – eager to forgive us of our sins! 2 Peter 3:9 tells us, "…He is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance." God desires to forgive us, so He provided for our forgiveness.

The only just penalty for our sins is death. The first half of Romans 6:23 declares, "For the wages of sin is death…" Eternal death is what we have earned for our sins. God, in His perfect plan, became a human being – Jesus Christ (John 1:1,14). Jesus died on the cross, taking the penalty that we deserve – death. Second Corinthians 5:21 teaches us, "God made Him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in Him we might become the righteousness of God." Jesus died on the cross, taking the punishment that we deserve! As God, Jesus' death provided forgiveness for the sins of the entire world. 1 John 2:2 proclaims, "He is the atoning sacrifice for our sins, and not only for ours but also for the sins of the whole world." Jesus rose from the dead, proclaiming His victory over sin and death (1 Corinthians 15:1-28). Praise God, through the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, the second half of Romans 6:23 is true, "…but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord."

Do you want to have your sins forgiven? Do you have a nagging feeling of guilt that you can’t seem to get to go away? Forgiveness of your sins is available if you will place your faith in Jesus Christ as your Savior. Ephesians 1:7 says, "In Him we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins, in accordance with the riches of God's grace." Jesus paid our debt for us, so we could be forgiven. All you have to do is ask God to forgive you through Jesus, believing that Jesus died to pay for your forgiveness – and He will forgive you! John 3:16-17 contains this wonderful message, "For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through Him."

Yes it is that easy! You can’t earn forgiveness from God. You can’t pay for your forgiveness from God. You can only receive it, by faith, through the grace and mercy of God. If you want to accept Jesus Christ as your Savior and receive forgiveness from God, here is a prayer you can pray. Saying this prayer or any other prayer will not save you. It is only trusting in Jesus Christ that can provide forgiveness of sins. This prayer is simply a way to express to God your faith in Him and to thank Him for providing for your forgiveness. "God, I know that I have sinned against You and am deserving of punishment. But Jesus Christ took the punishment that I deserve so that through faith in Him I could be forgiven. I place my trust in You for salvation. Thank You for Your wonderful grace and forgiveness! Amen!"

In this there are no Christmas trees, cakes, lights, or even gifts. The birth of Christ points to the cross, the grave, and resurrection. Christ lives as King.

聖書で預言されていたのは現代のイスラエルのことですか

今日の世界の人々は，中東の情勢を不安な気持ちで見守っています。ロケット弾攻撃，武装勢力の衝突，爆弾テロなどが頻発する不穏な状態に加えて，核兵器が使用される可能性も現実のものとなっているのです。世界じゅうの人が危惧するのも当然でしょう。

世界の人々は1948年5月にも，中東の情勢を心配そうに見守っていました。今から62年前のその時，当時のパレスチナに対する英国の委任統治が終わろうとしており，戦争が今にも起こりそうだったのです。国際連合はその前年に，この委任統治領の一部における独立したユダヤ人国家の創設を認めていました。周辺のアラブ諸国はそれを絶対に阻止すると誓っており，アラブ連盟は，「その分割線は戦火と流血の前線となるだけである」という警告を発しました。

そして1948年5月14日，金曜日の午後4時，英国委任統治もあと数時間を残すのみとなりました。テルアビブ博物館には，秘密裏に招待された350人の人々が，待望の発表を聞くために集まっていました。その発表とは，現代のイスラエルという国家の正式な独立宣言です。巣立とうとするこの国に敵対する者が多いので，それら敵たちに邪魔をされないよう，厳重な警備が敷かれていました。

イスラエル民族評議会の指導者であったダビド･ベングリオンが，「イスラエル国家樹立宣言」を読み上げました。その宣言は一部，次のようになっていました。「国民評議会の議員であり，エレツ･イスラエル（イスラエルの地）のユダヤ人社会の代表である我々は，……我々の生得的かつ歴史的権利により，また国連総会の決議に基づいて，ここにエレツ･イスラエルにおけるユダヤ人国家の樹立を宣言する。この国はイスラエルと呼ばれることになる」。

本当にそうなのでしょうか。イザヤ 66は，現代のイスラエルという国家の樹立を予言していたのですか。1948年5月14日は，「20世紀の預言的歴史における最も重要な瞬間」だったのでしょうか。現代のイスラエルが今でも神の選んだ国であるとしたら，また神が聖書の預言を成就するために同国を用いておられるとしたら，これは世界各地で聖書を研究している人々にとって，間違いなく関心のある問題です。

イザヤの預言はこう述べています。「まだ産みの苦しみの前に、一日のうちに、突然、イスラエルの国が産み落とされるのです。陣痛が始まると同時に、赤ん坊が生まれ、国が出現するのです。」。（イザヤ 66:8）この節ではっきりと予告されているのは，一国民全体が，一日のうちであるかのように突然，生まれることです。しかし，だれがこの誕生を生じさせるのでしょうか。次の9にそのヒントがあります。”わたしは胎を開かせておきながら、産ませないことがあろうか」と、あなたの神である主は言います。そんなことは、天地がひっくり返っても、あるはずがありません。”。父なる神様は，この国民の劇的な誕生がご自分のなせる業であることを，明らかにしておられます。

現代のイスラエルは，世俗の民主国家であり，公式には，聖書の神に頼っているとの主張をしていません。1948年当時のイスラエル人たちは，独立宣言ができたのは神のおかげだと考えていたでしょうか。いいえ。同宣言の原文には，神の名も“神”という語さえも使われていません。「ユダヤ史における極めて重要な瞬間」という本（英語）は，最終版の原文についてこう述べています。「民族評議会が午後1時に開かれた時点でも，議員たちは独立宣言の文言について合意に達していなかった。……正統ユダヤ教を遵守する者たちは，『イスラエルの神』に言及することを望んだが，政教分離を唱える者たちはそれに断固反対した。ベングリオンは妥協策として，『神』という語の代わりに『岩』を使う，という決定を下した」。

現代のイスラエルは，今日に至るまで，同国の樹立を，国連決議とユダヤ人の“生得的かつ歴史的権利”に基づくものとしています。聖書の神がそのような民のために20世紀における最も偉大な預言的奇跡を行なわれる，と考えるのは，道理にかなったことでしょうか。

現代のイスラエルの非宗教的な態度は，西暦前537年の状況と著しい対照をなしています。当時のイスラエル国民は確かに，一日のうちに生まれたかのように，“再び生まれ”ました。それに先立つ70年間，国土はバビロニア人によって荒廃させられ，人の住まない所となっていたのです。当時，イザヤ 66の預言は，ペルシャのキュロス大王がバビロンを征服し，ユダヤ人の故国への帰還を許可したときに，著しい成就を見ました。―エズラ 1:2。

ペルシャの王キュロスは，西暦前537年の出来事に神のみ手の働きを認めました。また，民がエルサレムに帰還したのは，神の崇拝を復興し，その神殿を再建するという明確な目的を果たすためでした。現代のイスラエルがそのような願いや意図を公式に表明したことは，一度もありません。

西暦33年，生来のイスラエル国民は，神のみ子イエス・キリストであるメシアを退けため，神の選民であると主張する資格を失いました。メシアご自身がこう述べています。「エルサレム、エルサレム。預言者たちを殺し、神がこの都のために遣わされたすべての人を石で打ち殺す町よ。わたしは、めんどりがひなを翼の下に集めるように、何度、あなたの子らを集めようとしたことでしょう。それなのに、あなたがたはそれを拒んでしまったのです。ですから、あなたがたの家は荒れ果てたまま見捨てられます。」。（マタイ 23:37，38）イエスのこの言葉は，西暦70年にローマ軍がエルサレムを神殿や祭司団もろとも滅ぼした時，現実となりました。では，『もし、わたしに従い、契約を守るなら、あなたがたは地上のあらゆる国々の中にあって、わたしの大切な民となる。全世界はわたしのものだからだ。あなたがたは神に仕える祭司の国、聖なる民となる。』を持つという神の目的はどうなったでしょうか。―出エジプト19:5,6。

自身も生来のユダヤ人である使徒ペテロは，異邦人とユダヤ人の両方を含むクリスチャンに宛てた手紙の中でその疑問に答え，こう書いています。『キリストは、信じる者にとって何よりも尊い方ですが、キリストを拒む者にとっては、「つまずきの石、妨げの岩」となりました。「家を建てる者たちの捨てた石が、なくてはならない土台石となった」とあるとおりです。彼らのつまずきの原因は、神のことばに耳を傾けず、従おうとしないことですが、そうなるように定められてもいたのです。しかし、あなたがたはそうではありません。あなたがたは神から選ばれた王なる祭司であり、きよい民として神のものとされた人たちです。それはすべて、どうして自分が暗闇から神の驚くべき光へと招き入れられたかを、人々に語り伝えるためなのです。あなたがたは、以前は全く無きに等しい者でしたが、今は神のものとされています。以前は神のいつくしみから遠い者でしたが、今では神のいつくしみによって変えられました。』。―ペテロ2:7-10。

ですから，聖霊を注がれることによって選ばれたクリスチャンが霊的な国民の一員となる，ということです。血筋や住む場所によって選ばれるのではありません。使徒パウロもこう書いています。「割礼を受けているかいないかは、今は、全く問題ではありません。大切なのは、私たちがほんとうに別の新しい人に造り変えられているかどうか、ということです。どうか、この原則に従って生きる人々、そして真に神のものとなった人々に、神のあわれみと平安がありますように。」。ガラテ6:15，16。

現代のイスラエルは，だれであれ生来のユダヤ人かユダヤ教に改宗した人には市民権を与える，としています。しかし，聖書で言う「イエス・キリストの使徒ペテロから、エルサレムを追われて、ポント、ガラテヤ、カパドキヤ、アジヤ、ビテニヤの各地方に散らされたユダヤ人クリスチャンの皆さんへ。父なる神は、ずっと昔からあなたがたを選び、ご自分の子どもにしようと決めておられました。そして、聖霊が働いて、あなたがたの心はイエス・キリストの血によってきよめられ、神に喜ばれる者へと変わったのです。どうか、神があなたがたを祝福し、すべての不安と恐れから解放してくださいますように。」人たちだけに与えられます。（一ペテロ1:1,2）この「神のイスラエル」の成員，すなわち霊的なユダヤ人について，パウロはこう書いています。「ユダヤ人の両親から生まれたとか、ユダヤ人と認められるための割礼（男子が生まれて八日目に、その性器の包皮を切り取る儀式）を受けたというだけでは、真のユダヤ人とは言えません。真のユダヤ人とは、心が神と正しい関係にある人のことです。神は、体の割礼を受けた人ではなく、心と思いが全く変えられた人を捜し求めておられるからです。そのような人こそ、人にはほめられなくても、神にほめていただけるのです。」。ローマ 2:28，29。

この聖句を念頭に置けば，パウロの述べた，議論の的になりがちな例えも理解できます。パウロはローマ人への手紙の中で，象徴的なオリーブの木に関して，不信仰な生来のユダヤ人という枝が切り落とされたので，そこへ異邦人という『野生の枝』が接ぎ木されることになった，と説明しました。「ところが、アブラハムの子孫という、オリーブの木の幾枝かが折り取られ、そして、いわば野生のオリーブの木の枝であった外国人のあなたがたが、それにつぎ木されました。それで今、あなたがたも、神がオリーブの木に注がれる、特別に豊かな滋養分にあずかって、アブラハムとその子孫とに約束された祝福をいただいているのです。ですから、折り取られた枝の代わりにつぎ木されたことを、誇ってはいけません。あなたがたは枝であって、根があなたがたを支えているからです。あなたは、「前の枝が折られたのは、私に場所を譲るためだった。とすれば、私はかなりいい人間に違いない」と考えるかもしれません。気をつけなさい。ユダヤ人のその枝が折り取られたのは神を信じなかったからであり、あなたがたがつぎ木されたのは、ただ神を信じたからです。このことを忘れないようにしなさい。高ぶってはいけません。むしろ、謙虚になって神を恐れなさい。もし神が台木の枝を惜しまなかったとすれば、ましてや、神をもはや信じないあなたがたを惜しむことはなさらないでしょう。」（ローマ 11:17‐21）そして結びに，「兄弟たちよ。あなたがたが知者だと自負することのないために、この奥義を知らないでいてもらいたくない。一部のイスラエル人がかたくなになったのは、異邦人が全部救われるに至る時までのことであって、こうして、イスラエル人は、すべて救われるであろう。すなわち、次のように書いてある、「救う者がシオンからきて、ヤコブから不信心を追い払うであろう。」と述べています。（ローマ 11:25，26）パウロは，ユダヤ人がある時点で一斉にキリスト教に改宗することを予告していたのでしょうか。そのような改宗が起きていないのは明らかです。

パウロは「全イスラエル」という表現で，霊的なイスラエル―聖霊を注がれることによって選ばれたクリスチャン―全員のことを言っていました。パウロによると，生来のユダヤ人がメシアを受け入れなかったからといって，神の目的がくじかれることはありません。その目的とは，霊的な『オリーブの木』に実を結ぶ枝の数がそろうようにすることでした。このことは，イエスの話した例えとも調和します。イエスは自分を，実を結ばない枝が切り取られるぶどうの木になぞらえました。こう語っています。「わたしはまことのぶどうの木、わたしの父は農夫である。わたしにつながっている枝で実を結ばないものは、父がすべてこれをとりのぞき、実を結ぶものは、もっと豊かに実らせるために、手入れしてこれをきれいになさるのである。」。ヨハネ 15:1，2。

現代のイスラエルという国家の樹立は聖書で予告されていませんでしたが，霊的イスラエル国民が確立されることは確かに予告されていました。今日，その霊的国民を見分けてその国民と交わる人は，とこしえの祝福を刈り取ることができるのです。―創世記 22:15‐18。ガラテア 3:8，9。

Does Bible Prophecy Point to the Modern State of Israel?

TODAY the world nervously watches the Middle East. Rocket attacks, clashes of armed militias, and terrorist bombings are frequent occurrences. Add to this explosive mixture the very real possibility that nuclear weapons could be used. No wonder people everywhere are worried!

The world was also anxiously watching the Middle East in May of 1948. At that time, 62 years ago, the British mandate to occupy what was then called Palestine was ending, and war was imminent. The year before, the United Nations had authorized the creation of an independent Jewish State in a portion of the occupied territories. The surrounding Arab nations had vowed to prevent this at any cost. “The partition line shall be nothing but a line of fire and blood,” warned the Arab League.

It was Friday afternoon, May 14, 1948, at 4:00 p.m. The final hours of the British mandate were ticking away. In the Tel Aviv Museum, a small crowd of 350 onlookers were present by secret invitation for an eagerly anticipated announcement

David Ben-Gurion, the leader of Israel’s National Council, read The Declaration of the Establishment of the State of Israel. It stated, in part: “We, members of the People’s Council, representatives of the Jewish Community of Eretz-Israel by virtue of our natural and historic right and on the strength of the Resolution of the United Nations General Assembly, hereby declare the establishment of a Jewish State in Eretz-Israel, to be known as the State of Israel.”

Some Evangelical Protestants believe that the modern State of Israel thus fulfilled a Bible prophecy. For example, in the book Jerusalem Countdown, televangelist and mega-church leader John Hagee states: “This momentous occasion had been recorded by the pen of the prophet Isaiah, saying, ‘A nation shall be born in a day.’ (See Isaiah 66:8.) It was the greatest moment in prophetic history of the twentieth century. It was living evidence for all men to see that the God of Israel was alive and well.”

Is that statement true? Did Isaiah 66:8 predict the establishment of the modern State of Israel? Was May 14, 1948, the “greatest moment in prophetic history of the twentieth century”? If the modern State of Israel is still God’s chosen nation, and if he is using it to fulfill Bible prophecies, this would certainly be of interest to Bible students everywhere.

Isaiah’s prophecy states: Who hath heard such a thing? who hath seen such things? Shall the earth be made to bring forth in one day? or shall a nation be born at once? for as soon as Zion travailed, she brought forth her children. (Isaiah 66:8) The verse is clearly foretelling the sudden birth of an entire nation, as if in a single day. But who would cause this birth? The next verse (Is 66:9) gives a clue: “Shall I bring to the birth, and not cause to bring forth? saith the Lord: shall I cause to bring forth, and shut the womb? saith thy God.” God makes it clear that the dramatic birth of the nation would be his doing.

Modern Israel is governed as a secular democracy that officially makes no claim to rely on the God of the Bible. Did the Israelis in 1948 recognize God as the one responsible for their declaration of statehood? They did not. Neither the name of God nor even the word “God” was mentioned anywhere in the original text of the proclamation. The book Great Moments in Jewish History says this of the final text: “Even at 1:00 P.M. when the National Council met, its members could not agree about the wording of the proclamation of statehood. Observant Jews wanted a reference to ‘the God of Israel.’ Secularists balked. Compromising, Ben-Gurion decided that the word ‘Rock’ would appear instead of ‘God.’”

The modern State of Israel to this day bases its claim to statehood on a UN resolution and what it calls the “natural and historic right of the Jewish people”. Is it reasonable to expect that the God of the Bible would perform the greatest prophetic miracle in the 20th century in behalf of a people who refuse to give him credit?

Modern Israel’s secular attitude contrasts sharply with the situation in 537 BC. Back then, the nation of Israel was indeed ‘reborn’ as if in a day after being devastated and depopulated by the Babylonians 70 years earlier. At that time, Isaiah 66:8 was strikingly fulfilled when the Persian conqueror of Babylon, Cyrus the Great, authorized the return of the Jews to their homeland. Ezra 1:2.

The Persian King Cyrus recognized God’s hand in the matter in 537 BC, and those who returned to Jerusalem did so for the express purpose of restoring the worship of God and rebuilding his temple. The modern State of Israel has never officially declared any such desire or intention.

In the year 33 AD, the fleshly nation of Israel lost its claim to be God’s chosen nation when it rejected God’s Son, Jesus Christ. Jesus put it this way: “O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, thou that killest the prophets, and stonest them which are sent unto thee, how often would I have gathered thy children together, even as a hen gathereth her chickens under her wings, and ye would not! Behold, your house is left unto you desolate. ” (Matthew 23:37, 38) Jesus’ statement came true when in 70 AD, Roman legions destroyed Jerusalem along with its temple and priesthood. This also was the genocide of all Hebrew lineage Jews as this occurred during the Passover Sabbaths. But what was to become of God’s purpose for Israel “Now therefore, if ye will obey my voice indeed, and keep my covenant, then ye shall be a peculiar treasure unto me above all people: for all the earth is mine: and ye shall be unto me a kingdom of priests, and an holy nation. These are the words which thou shalt speak unto the children of Israel.”? Exodus 19:5, 6.

The apostle Peter, himself a fleshly Jew, answered that question in a letter written to Christians. 1Peter 2:7-10: Unto you therefore which believe he is precious: but unto them which be disobedient, the stone which the builders disallowed, the same is made the head of the corner, and a stone of stumbling, and a rock of offence, even to them which stumble at the word, being disobedient: whereunto also they were appointed. But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvellous light: which in time past were not a people, but are now the people of God: which had not obtained mercy, but now have obtained mercy.

Christians who were selected by the Holy Spirit thus belong to a spiritual nation, their membership not being determined by birth or geographic location. The apostle Paul described the matter this way: “For in Christ Jesus neither circumcision availeth any thing, nor uncircumcision, but a new creature. And as many as walk according to this rule, peace be on them, and mercy, and upon the Israel of God.” Galatians 6:15, 16.

Whereas the modern nation of Israel offers to confer citizenship upon any natural or converted Jew, citizenship in what the Bible calls “the Israel of God” is given only to those who are “elect according to the foreknowledge of God the Father, through sanctification of the Spirit, unto obedience and sprinkling of the blood of Jesus Christ: Grace unto you, and peace, be multiplied.” (1 Peter 1:2) Speaking of these members of the Israel of God, or spiritual Jews, Paul wrote: “For he is not a Jew, which is one outwardly; neither is that circumcision, which is outward in the flesh: but he is a Jew, which is one inwardly; and circumcision is that of the heart, in the spirit, and not in the letter; whose praise is not of men, but of God.” Romans 2:28, 29.

That verse helps us understand a controversial comment Paul made. In his letter to the Romans, Paul explained how the unbelieving natural Jews were like branches of a symbolic olive tree that were lopped off so that “wild” Gentile “branches” could be grafted in. (Romans 11:17-21) Concluding this illustration, he states: “For I would not, brethren, that ye should be ignorant of this mystery, lest ye should be wise in your own conceits; that blindness in part is happened to Israel, until the fulness of the Gentiles be come in. And so all Israel shall be saved: as it is written, There shall come out of Sion the Deliverer, and shall turn away ungodliness from Jacob” (Romans 11:25, 26) Was Paul foretelling an eleventh hour mass conversion of the Jews to Christianity? Clearly, no such conversion has taken place.

By the expression “and so all Israel,” and so means in this manner Israel would be saved by individual Jews believing in Jesus Christ. Paul then meant all of spiritual Israel—Christians who have been selected by holy spirit. He was saying that the failure of the natural Jews to accept the Messiah would not thwart God’s purpose to have a spiritual ‘olive tree’ full of productive branches. This is in harmony with Jesus’ own illustration of himself as a vine whose nonproductive branches will be lopped off. Jesus said: “I am the true vine, and my Father is the husbandman. Every branch in me that beareth not fruit he taketh away: and every branch that beareth fruit, he purgeth it, that it may bring forth more fruit. ”—John 15:1, 2.

Although the establishment of the modern State of Israel was not foretold in the Bible, the establishment of the nation of spiritual Israel certainly was! If you identify and associate with that spiritual nation today, you will reap eternal blessings. Genesis 22:15-18; Galatians 3:8, 9.
